Customize Windows lock screen image

Today when walking in the office to the coffee machine I saw somebody who had changed his Windows Vista Lock Screen. It really never  came to me, but my desktop screen is not shown whenever I lock my screen. And, that happens every second I walk away from my desk.

So, I turned to Google. Found several incomplete pages (at least for me incomplete), so here the result in one article…

  • Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\system32 folder.
  • Right click on the imageres.dll file.
  • Select Properties and then select Security. (we have to take full ownership of this file)
  • Click on the Advanced tab and choose Owner.
  • Click Edit.
  • Select Administrator and click OK.
  • Right click imagres.dll again.
  • Select Properties and select Security.
  • Click Edit.
  • Choose Administrator.
  • Check Allow in Full Control.
  • Click OK, Yes and then OK again.
  • rename the file to imageres.dllold
  • download ResHack!
  • Find the one that matches your resolution, and open that numbered folder.
  • 5031 = 1280×1024
    5032 = 1280×960
    5033 = 1024×768
    5034 = 1600×1200
    5035 = 1440×900
    5036 = 1920×1200
    5037 = 1280×768
    5038 = 1360×768
    5039 = 1024×1280
    5040 = 960×1280
    5041 = 900×1440
    5042 = 768×1280
    5043 = 768×1360

    Right click on the “1033″ and select “Replace Resource”.
    Browse to another image (preferrably of the same size… I don’t know what Vista does as far as stretching/tiling the image).
    When it asks you for the resource info, type this in:
    Resource Type: IMAGE
    Resource Name: 50xx (your screen resolution from above, the 50__ number)
    Resource Language: 1033

  • save this one as imageres.dll
  • If you are having troubles with renaming the file, you do not have full access to the file. Please walk over those steps again!

    1. Nou, dat is nog eens zinloos. Maar wel geinig. Jammer dat het via zo’n omweg moet, kunnen ze dat niet toegankelijker maken, waarom moet et altijd zo moeilijk.

    2. did improve the article, was missing directions about giving the right name to the file….

    3. Does this work for Windows 7 too?
